Superbugs In Stock Report

On October 13, 2022 FACT along with several members of the Antibiotics Off the Menu coalition published our first annual SUPERBUGS IN STOCK report which ranks the top U.S. grocery chains on their corporate policies related to antibiotic use in their private label meat and poultry supplies. The report reveals that Eight of the 12 largest U.S. supermarket companies, including Walmart and Trader Joe’s are failing to protect human and animal health by allowing suppliers to misuse antibiotics in their meat and poultry production.

CHAIN REACTION

FACT and members of the Antibiotics Off the Menu coalition have published six annual reports ranking the top U.S. restaurant chains on their policies related to antibiotic use by their meat suppliers.

The CHAIN REACTION reports illustrate the success of our efforts to reduce antibiotic over use; however, progress has been made primarily in the chicken industry. FACT is currently focusing our work on reducing antibiotic overuse in cattle and pigs. In response to campaigns by FACT and allied organizations, most major U.S. restaurant chains no longer purchase chicken from suppliers that routinely administer antibiotics to their animals.

With our latest report, we are also beginning to see commitments for beef. FACT will have to keep the pressure on to make sure they follow but this is the beginning of a change in the massive beef industry. Chipotle and Panera by already transitioning away from meat produced with routine antibiotic use have led the way but to get broader change in the beef industry more companies need to seek change.
